Why Should You Be A Vegetarian By Choice?

The other day when I was telling a friend of mine about this blog and asked him to have a look at it, he asked me what the blog was all about.

“What do you mean by Vegetarian By Choice?”

I also realized that his question was both from an interested party’s point of view as well as that of a marketing professional who wanted to understand the rationale behind the blog from the consumer (reader) point of view.

So let me try and clarify what the blog is about. This will I guess, also help me clarify my own thoughts and give me the added advantage of letting the 97% of the world community of meat eaters that I am not trying to belittle them by advocating vegetarianism!

As I have mentioned on earlier occasions, “Life Lives on Life to Live” and hence whatever we eat – meat or vegetables – is derived from living beings. And this is true for all of the animal kingdom. And therefore if man eats animals, it validates the above statement that living beings live on living beings and hence nothing wrong about it. There is nothing unethical about his eating flesh of fellow animals.

However…

Of all the animals that inhabit the world, human beings are the most intelligent and “conscious” about the world around them. They are the ones, who can mould the surroundings as per their needs or whims, develop survival strategies which would allow them to survive even under adverse conditions, harness natural resources to both their advantage and longer term “disadvantage” (!) etc. Basically, man can do what he pleases with nature.

Now as Spiderman’s uncle would tell him, “With great power comes great responsibility.” And what man needs to understand is that his power has enabled him to catch, kill and eat animals (which nature did not want his to In the first place – God made us vegetarian, we made ourselves meat eaters) but in the process he is doing great damage to the environment.

He is changing the entire ecological balance. On the one hand he destroying a large horde of animals – everywhere, on land, sea and in air – which he cannot replenish, and on the other he is also unnaturally “cultivating” animals for the express purpose of putting them on his dinner plate. Both these activities are straining the environment to the extent that it is only a matter of time when it will turn back on man and make him understand who the real boss is.

In his desire to eat meat, man is inviting newer diseases (mad cow, swine flu etc are in my opinion only the trailer of the things to come in future) and making his life unhealthier. This is also because man is not a natural meat consumer. And when you do something which you are not supposed to, you got to pay a price for that.

Man is also adding to the global warming by his unrestricted indulgence of meat. There are innumerable studies out there that tell us how animals that we cultivate add to methane in the atmosphere which is one of the principal culprits in the crime of heating up the planet.

The “artificial” population of animals that end up inside human stomach is also putting a tremendous strain on the natural resources that are so very important for the survival of not just human beings but life as we all know on this planet namely Water and Oxygen.

I plan to write a lot about these issues in gory details in the coming days.

Finally in a nut shell, this blogger believes

  • Consuming life to live is natural and hence bashing meat eaters on ethical grounds is unjustifiable.
  • Man is not designed to eat meat and hence he should not consume meat.
  • Man should opt to be a vegetarian for one and only one reason – Environment. That is why the tag line – Love the earth? Be a Vegetarian!

I am sure a vast majority of you will not agree with me, but that is fine. Let us have a healthy debate and in the end one of us will be convinced of the other’s point of view.

And my wish is that it is YOU!
